Derry District Sports Council Awards

Following the Launch for the 2011 Derry District Sports Council Awards, a final appeal for nominations has been made as deadline approaches on Friday 27th January 2012.

Council Chairman Michael Hutton has appealed to those involved in sport in the City to submit their applications for nominations before this Friday, for the Award Ceremony which takes place on 17th February. Nominations are open for a total of 20 award categories.

The Mayor Alderman Maurice Devenney, giving his backing to the awards, said it was important that local sports persons are recognised and their achievements celebrated.

Mr Hutton commented on the event, “In terms of sports events, this one is unique, as not only does it enable us to acknowledge the effort, commitment and achievements of so many of our athletes – from age ten to senior citizen – but it also affords us the opportunity to recognize the contribution of so many who give of their time to ensure that all sports enthusiasts in the city are catered for – i.e. coaches, team managers, mentors, physios, administrators etc”.

He continued, “As a Sports Council, we embrace all sports and I would encourage all those involved in sports in this city to get right behind their sport and their athletes and nominate them for one of the twenty awards to be decided upon on February 17th. Granted in each category there can be only one winner but for an athlete to know that his coach, or manager or team mates thought enough of him or he, to put forward a nomination says so much to that athlete and will no doubt encourage and inspire them to even higher standards of commitment and dedication in their chosen specialist sport.

Nomination forms can be obtained from Karen Dillon, Derry City Council Development Office (Tel 71365151) and all nominations must be returned by 12 noon on Friday 27th January 2012.
