The ‘LegenDerrys’
Congratulations to the Derry-Londonderry crew in the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race. The team managed to achieve 2nd place in Race 7, the stage from the Gold Coast up to Singapore.
The team with their well-earned nickname, the “LegenDerrys”, faced adverse weather conditions and the threat of pirates in the Singapore Straits, causing race officials to cut short this stage of the competition and allowing the Derry-Londonderry team to swoop into second place on the podium. The competition was close between the 10, internationally backed yachts competing. The winners, Gold Coast Australia, managed to sneak into a slim lead by heading further north and hooking into a highly favourable current.
The Derry-Londonderry yacht is competing to promote the UK City of Culture 2013 and this fantastic result has given the team new enthusiasm for the next stage up to Batam, Indonesia.
