Coach Week


A number of guest speakers will take part in the forthcoming Coaching Conference which takes place in the city on Saturday, 18th February. The Conference is the culmination of ‘Coach Week’, organised by Derry City Councils’ Sports Development section, and aimed at sports coaches and club members looking to widen their skills and knowledge in a range of sporting activities.

The three keynote speakers to attend the conference have a wealth of academic and professional experience in the Sports industry with impressive and extensive CV’s to match. Desi Curry, IFA Technical Director since 2009 and Shane McCullough, Associate Head of School at the Ulster Sports Academy University of Ulster, who is also involved with IFA on a consultancy basis, have been confirmed to take part in the Conference to deliver workshops. Joining them will be Eugene Young, Director of Coaching and Games development at the Ulster Council, Eugene has represented Derry and Ulster in Gaelic Football and played International basketball for Ireland competing at pre-Olympic tournaments.

Ryan Deighan from Derry City Council said the aim of Coach Week is to inspire and support coaches at local level to engage in coach education and development. Encouraging coaches to come along to the Conference Ryan said: “It is an excellent way of acquiring new skills, networking with other local clubs and learning how to promote sport in your community. I welcome the participation of such an outstanding line up of speakers and tutors involved to deliver the Coaching Conference on Saturday.”

Along with the address from the Keynote speakers, the Coaching Conference offers three streams of different workshops and seminars to choose from with a range of expert tutors offering interactive, practical and essential training, coaching and development techniques to participants.

The Coaching Conference will take place at Da Vinci’s Hotel from 10am-2pm on 18th February 2012. Registration is now open for the Conference and as places are limited advance booking is advised.
