First Artist Revealed In 2012 ‘Meet The Maker’

The first artist to showcase her work and her skill in the 2012 ‘Meet the Maker’ programme is local artist and printmaker, Sara Brown.

Her new exhibition ‘Calm Waves’ will open this year’s exhibition, workshop and demonstration series at Ards Borough Council’s flagship craft and design centre, Ards Crafts, on Saturday 3rd March.

The artist herself will be on hand to demonstrate simple mono and pressure printing techniques, while also showing how relief inks were applied to commercial litho plates for the pieces on display, all of which reflect the winding coastal journey from Newtownards to Portaferry and how the still glow of fragile grey light varies the focus on islands and shorelines. Put together for the exhibition, the work creates the impression of viewing the long low hills and linear shorelines through a horizontal viewfinder which are interrupted like frames on photographic film.

Every month from now through to the end of 2012, textile artists, potters, a jewellery maker and a glass artist will be among the crafts people to reveal their inspirations, designs, processes and techniques in exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations.

“Meet the Maker has proved immensely popular since its launch in 2010, because all the artists and crafts people put themselves up on display as much as their work and that personal approach is very appealing,” said Heather Parker, Craft Development Manager with Ards Borough Council. “I look forward to the 2012 series of exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations once again making art, craft and design more accessible, as well as acting as a showcase for just some of the enormously talented makers who live and work in the Ards”.

Sara Brown’s demonstration takes place on Saturday 3rd March from 11am to 1pm and is free of charge. Her exhibition ‘Calm Wave’ @the Space, Ards Crafts newly launched exhibition area, continues until 31st March in Ards Crafts, 31 Regent Street, Newtownards (entrance via the Tourist Information Centre). Admission is free for exhibitions and demonstrations. Workshops must be booked and spaces are limited.
