Independent Retailers gets a makeover

Independent retailers in Belfast are getting a makeover to boost their profile and sales, as well as take advantage of new marketing opportunities.
It is part of Belfast City Council’s first ever Independent Retail Week (BIRW) which will celebrate the range and quality of the independent traders in the city and will take place on 5-11 March.
The week sees the start of a series of workshops with issues such as Customer Care, Facebook for Retailers, Trading On-line and Creating Fabulous Displays being covered.
BIRW is highlighting quality neighbourhood as well as city centre shopping and 160 independent retailers have already signed up to participate in events during the week.
Retailers are taking part in a Visual Merchandising and Customer Care competition, and offering shopping promotions and other in-store events.
Alderman Christopher Stalford, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Development Committee, said: “This is a tough economic climate for everyone but independent retailers, in particular, need a boost because they don’t have the resources that larger chains can call on.
“Many are one person or family businesses which employ small numbers but small businesses are the backbone of our economy, they are what differentiate one city from another and they are a vital service in local communities.
“We want to help them promote their service and encourage customers to recognise the importance of supporting independent retailers.”
The council is working pro-actively with traders trying to address issues which affect their business including car parking, environmental improvements, street cleansing and business rates.
Paul Carlin, a partner in Colors Hairdressing in the north of the city, said: “We decided to get involved because it is about ensuring businesses outside the city centre are not marginalised. We are happy to take part and are offering a prize during the week.”
BIRW runs from 5-11 March and will begin with a Celebrate Fashion Showcase Event in the City Hall. Tickets for this are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre on 028 9024 6609. More information on BIRW is available from our website www.belfastcity.gov.uk/retail
