Take a ‘Mum Break’


Over half of NI mums (64%) skip lunch because they ‘simply don’t have time’a recent poll conducted by Kingsmill has revealed.

As the fresh thinking brand reveals its new look packaging across the range of innovative breads, bakery favourites and rolls; the poll revealed that shockingly almost a quarter of mums said they are lucky to grab 5 minutes or less to refuel and almost half of the mums surveyed that do eat lunch (45%), only make time for a “quickie 15 minute break”.

The survey was commissioned by Kingsmill to drive home the importance of eating lunch. Victoria Brown, Allied Bakeries explained: “Looking at the results it’s clear that our mums need to make time for lunch. More than half of those polled (63%) agreed that their daily routine has an impact on being able to take a mid-day break whether that’s juggling kids, housework or their job. Furthermore only 12% actually take time at lunch to sit back, relax and savour the moment.

“As part of our ‘Mum Break’ campaign we want to encourage busy mothers to take time to stop, re-energise and enjoy a ‘Mum Break’…everyday! With fresh thinking ideas from our new look Kingsmill range; from Soft White, Tasty Wholemeal, Crusts Away! and our new 50/50 sandwich alternative range there are lots of quick and easy lunchtime ideas for the whole family – including mum.”

The Kingsmill poll also indicated the majority of mums (82%) understand the importance of breakfast but surprisingly, 45% didn’t rate lunch as a necessity.

As part of the campaign to encourage mum’s to take a break for lunch, Kingsmill have looked into why the experts recommend taking lunch;

1. Eating in the middle of the day re-energises your body, improving focus and concentration and helping to avoid feeling sluggish later in the day
2. If you work full time, taking a break can help to reduce stress and also improve efficiency
3. Skipping lunch can mean you are more likely to reach for a less healthy snack later in the afternoon
4. If your children have their lunch at school, then this is your chance to cater for your own tastes
5. Eating lunch can be another good opportunity to get one of your five a day – some salad, vegetable soup or a piece of fruit will all add up
6. Don’t forget to have a drink. Many of us feel tired because we are dehydrated so start your lunch with a glass of water
7. Taking some time out in the middle of the day is important for your wellbeing… taking a break to catch up will a pal will lift your spirits
