Healthy City status for city

Derry has been designated as a member of the World Health Organisation European Network of Healthy Cities following a successful bid by the Derry Healthy Cities organisation.

Welcoming the news, the Mayor Cllr Paul Fleming said: "To achieve WHO healthy cities status is a tremendous achievement for our city. It is a designation for the whole city and not just one particular organisation. The onus is on all of us now to work collectively to ensure that public health is placed high on the agenda for all statutory agencies."

The Mayor was speaking following a meeting with key stakeholders and policy drivers who have pledged their commitment to ensuring the overall objectives of the WHO Healthy Cities policy are achieved.

Fiona Teague is from Derry Healthy Cities who submitted the application on behalf of Derry City Council. She explained the principles of the status.
