Bangor RNLI launched 36 times in 2023 as lifesaving charity puts out its own Mayday call

Bangor RNLI is calling on members of the public to support the RNLI’s Mayday fundraising campaign, after revealing they launched on service 36 times last year.

With demand for its lifesaving services at a high, the charity is putting out its own ‘Mayday’ call, urging members of the local community to take part in the Mayday Mile – taking on the challenge of covering a mile a day for the month of May. All money raised will help to provide the charity’s vital lifesaving service, such as the training and equipment that is needed to keep its lifesavers safe, while they risk their own lives to save others.

Funds raised will help support the charity’s vital lifesaving work, including the provision of important training and kit for the volunteer lifeboat crews who readily risk their own lives to save others whenever the call for help comes in.

Bangor RNLI volunteer Glen McMahon says: ‘Summer is the busiest time of year for the RNLI, with thousands of people at risk of getting into danger by the water. Having recently marked the RNLI’s 200th anniversary, we’re putting out our call for help to raise the funds which will help keep our lifesaving service going today and into the future.

‘As a charity we rely on the generosity of the public to take part in events like the Mayday Mile and raise the funds that allow us to be there when we’re needed most.’

THE EMPIRE LAUGHS BACK AND HARP LAGER PARTNER TO BRING LIVE COMEDY TOUR TO ALL SIX COUNTIES OF NORTHERN IRELAND

World-renowned comedy club, The Empire Laughs Back, is taking its much-loved comedy evening on tour to all six counties of Northern Ireland for the very first time. Belfast’s longest running and most revered comedy club has been making people laugh since 1992, welcoming some of the biggest names in comedy through the doors for over 30 years.

The local comedy scene has recently had an incredible boom, with comedians selling out arenas, collaborating on projects, launching successful podcasts, and even making a name for themselves globally. With a clear growth in demand for comedy, and more people seeking out moments of humour during difficult times, the club has partnered with Harp Lager to take their much-loved show on the road.

Featuring top-quality acts from across the UK and Ireland comedy circuit, attendees at the events are set for a brilliant nights craic and great tasting pints. Taking turns to host will be local legends Colin Murphy, Paddy McDonnell and Andrew Ryan and keeping the laughter going will be headline acts such as Ciaran Barlett, Paddy Raff, Susie McCabe, William Thompson, John Colleary, Adam Bloom, with more still to be announced.

Entertaining new audiences as they go, the Empire Laughs Back tour will stop at the following locations:

  • Harbour Gin Bar, Portrush: Wednesday 10th April
  • Sallys Of Omagh: Wednesday 17th April
  • O’Hares Newcastle: Wednesday 24th April
  • Peadar O’Donnell’s, Co Londonderry/Derry: Wednesday 1st May
  • Blakes of the Hollow, Enniskillen: Wednesday 15th May
  • Court House Bar, Lurgan: Wednesday 29th May

Commenting on the tour, Elaine Johnson, Harp Brand Manager, said, “Harp has been a proud partner to The Empire Laughs Back Comedy Club over the past 3 years. During that time, we’ve seen the comedy scene flourish and last year we tested the waters by going on tour to three locations outside of Belfast. We were overwhelmed by the response! With all tickets selling out and some in less than 24 hours!

“As a brand that is very down-to-earth and enjoys a laugh, we feel it is the right time to extend this tour. This year we will show up in all six counties, reaching new audiences, spreading the laughter, and of course offering up a free pint of Harp to enjoy along the way.”

Jade Henry, Production Executive at The Empire Laughs Back said: “I firmly believe humour makes us more resilient, creative, and resourceful people, it is simply good for the soul! In recent years we’ve seen such growth in popularity across the local comedy industry and as a result, we’ve loved welcoming more people through the doors of our Belfast venue.

“It feels like the perfect time to be taking our much-loved comedy night across all six counties of Northern Ireland. We are excited to share the talent of the comedians we have the pleasure to work with and bring laughter across the country.”

Tickets for the tour are now on sale at empirelaughsback.com at a cost of £12 per person, with a discounted rate for students of £10 per person. Not forgetting a free pint of Harp on arrival. “Turkeys made him a Poet”

An interview with the much-loved poet Seamus Heaney in our second issue in Winter 1966.

Who knew a row of turkeys hanging in a butcher’s shop would set Seamus Heaney on his way to becoming one of the most widely acclaimed Irish poets.

Have a read at the poem below:

Turkeys Observed

One observes them, one expects them;

Blue-breasted in their indifferent mortuary,

Beached bare on the cold marble slabs

In immodest underwear frills of feather.

The red sides of beef retain

Some of the smelly majesty of living:

A half-cow slung from a hook maintains

That blood and flesh are not ignored.

But a turkey cowers in death.

Pull his neck, pluck him, and look –

He is just another poor forked thing,

A skin bag plumped with inky putty.

He once complained extravagantly

In an overture of gobbles;

He lorded it on the claw-flecked mud

With a grey flick of his Confucian eye.

Now, as I pass the bleak Christmas dazzle,

I find him ranged with his cold squadrons:

The fuselage is bare, the proud wings snapped,

The tail-fan stripped down to a shameful rudder.

Winter Walks

By Rebecca Parker

We are without a doubt getting closer to the winter months as you can feel a very crisp, coolness in the air. I love getting wrapped up in my winter woollies – scarf, hat, gloves, coat, boots and about 10 layers of clothing underneath! I have made up a small list of some of my favourite places to head out for a winter walk in Co. Down.

Montalto Estate

Montalto Estate has the most beautiful grounds for you to explore as well as trails and walks aplenty to choose from. From the Woodland Trail, The Lake Walk, The Garden Walk, The History Trail and The Lost Garden Trail – take your pick! Once you’ve burned off the calories you can head into their gorgeous café and put them all back on again with a spot of lunch or a wee sweet treat. Make sure to also check out their Christmas shop to really get you into the festive spirit!

Location: Montalto Estate, Spa Road, Ballynahinch, BT24 8PT

Tollymore Forest Park

Having grown up beside Tollymore I have well and truly lost count of the amount of times we have walked here. It has been attracting more visitors in recent years as some of hit TV show, Game of Thrones was filmed here! You can skip across the stepping stones, visit the Hermitage cottage and walk right up to the King’s Grave. There is also a swing park, campsite and a takeaway coffee truck to get a hot drink from to keep you toasty during your walk.

Location: Bryansford Road, Newcastle BT33 0PR

Hillsborough Forest Park

Hillsborough is one of my favourite places to go on weekend walk around the lake with the dogs. There are different paths throughout the forest as well as a great swing park for the kids. There’s also a little coffee van where you can pick up something sweet or there’s plenty of cafes in Hillsborough itself. It is always so peaceful here and is pretty flat making it easy for prams and wheelchairs and there is seating around the park which is perfect when in need of a little rest.

Location: Hillsborough, BT26 6DP

Mourne Park

Mourne Park only opened to the public last summer and it has quickly become one of my favourite places to go for a walk. There are different loops/walks depending on how strenuous you wish your walk to be. It is completely free, with parking on site and you can hit up the driving range for some golf after if you fancy it. It is one of the largest expanses of ancient woodland here in Northern Ireland and is maintained by The Woodland Trust.

Location: Kilkeel, Newry, BT34 4LB

Kilbroney Park

Located in Rostrevor, Kilbroney Park offers the most stunning panoramic views over Carlingford Lough from Kodak corner. The forest has riverside walking paths, bike trails, a Narnia trail as well as a path which leads up the Cloughmore stone which dates back to the ice age. If you are a hiking enthusiast then you can hike up Slieve Martin from the park too. They also have a Synge & Byrne café which has some delicious treats on offer.

Location: Shore Road, Rostrevor, Newry, BT34 3AA

World Mental Health Day 2023

World Mental Health Day is a day to talk about how important mental health is and show that no one is alone no matter what they are struggling with.

The hardest thing to do sometimes is to ask for help but this day shows everyone that it is ok to ask for help, there’s nothing to be ashamed of – you need to look after yourself and asking for a little help is one of the best things you can do to help you through the tough times.

I have put together a list of a few things that help me when I’m struggling and I hope, if you’re reading this – they add a little brightness to your day too!

  1. Treat yourself to something you enjoy!

Whether it be a hot drink from your favourite coffee shop, a mooch around a bookstore or simply spending the day watching your ultimate comfort show – do it! We all need a break at times and doing something you enjoy may help take your mind off the negatives for a little while.

  1. Get Active!

Exercise is not for everyone but for me it really helps! I don’t know if it’s the release of endorphins or simply just burning some of the anxiety off, I always leave the gym feeling a little lighter mentally than when I went in! Now, you don’t have to go to the gym, running is also one of my favourite coping mechanisms or simply go for a walk, somewhere scenic and listen to your favourite podcasts that always bring a smile to your face.

  1. Text a friend!

Pick up the phone and text, ring, video call or meet up with a friend! Friends really can be the best pick-me-up when you’re not feeling your best. Your friends want to be there for you and want to help so don’t be afraid about “burdening them” because you’re not! They will be more upset if you don’t go to them for support because that is what friends are for and as they say, ‘laughter is the best medicine’.

  1. Explore the outdoors/Nature

During the pandemic I spent the majority of my team outdoors on our family farm and I honestly say I’ve never felt better! There is a lot to be said for getting all the vitamin D and just enjoying time out in nature – there really are some beautiful scenes to be seen here in Northern Ireland. You can stay close to home or head on a day trip to the North Coast, Newcastle or Donegal and enjoy some time outdoors.

  1. Cuddles with pets

There is honestly nothing better than having a wee snuggle with your pet! My dogs are probably absolutely sick of me by this point but they honestly just brighten up even the worst of days. If you don’t have a pet at home, head round to a friends or family members house and get a cuddle from their pet. If you’re not an animal lover then maybe give this one a miss!
